About Habitat for Humanity
A nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry incorporated in 1987 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Montgomery Habitat for Humanity builds simple and affordable homes in partnership with those in need of decent housing. Our mission is driven by the stark reality that thousands of Montgomery residents live in dangerous, unhealthy housing. For Habitat for Humanity partner families, our self-help housing program is a beacon of hope.
Habitat builds houses alongside families who demonstrate need and willingness to partner with Habitat. Families invest 400 hours of their own “sweat-equity” labor into the houses. Families then purchase their homes through no profit mortgages, and their monthly mortgage payments help fund the construction of more houses. A local Board of Directors and staff direct the affiliate and are responsible for family selection, fund raising, house construction and all day-to-day operations.
